Booked a river view room which is the only reason to go to this hotel. A river view at a very reasonable cost. And a really nice view it is, especially at night. You could have a similar view at the Sheraton or the Lijiang Waterfall hotels for double or triple the price. For what we paid I’d opt for the Universal. But you have to have a river view room. Initially they took us to a rear view room which they immediately changed when i pointed out there was no river !! The view of the rooms at the rear is the neighbouring run down blocks of flats only 20 metres away where you are overlooking dozens of peoples living rooms etc, not a pretty site at all. Room was clean but the lower price was reflected in a more basic feel compared to good 3 or 4 * hotels. Reasonably equipped but just lacking the quality feel. Buffet breakfast also appeared to be similar to usual 3* city hotels but service wasn’t quite up to what you expect in China. Good hotels really know how to deliver service removing unwanted plates etc at breakfast. This one just wasn’t quite up to scratch. If operating on a budget I’d book again. If you want guaranteed quality I’d pick one of the many alternatives in the city. People come to Guilin for the Li river and the surrounding limestone scenery but take an extra day and go to Longsheng rice terraces, simply stunning. This city really is making the effort for tourists, do also take the waterfront boat tour at night. Its only an hour and gives a really good view of the river bank and inner lake.

This hotel was booked by our travelagent for one night. We were on our way to Yangshou (by boat) and needed one night in Guilin. On the boat we saw much more people who stayed in the hotel. The lobby looked promising, but once on the 6th floor it looked much less promising (shabby carpet; the smell was not good). The room was just big enough for one additional bed. The room itself needs refurbishment, the bathroom was small but looked as if it had been refurbished not so long ago. Strange separation between room and bathroom with glass; works with close relatives but not so sure if you do not appreciate your roommates watching your skylines when using the shower!we made the mistake to take the dinerbuffet in the same hotel. It was terrible, cold, old and not tasty. The breakfastbuffet in the morning was not better; good if you want to lose some weight. I am not sure if I ever had such a bad coffee, even in the US it is better. The location of the hotel is not bad from a shopping point of view, but during the night it was very noisy till around 3 am.The airconditioning did not work and after asking to turn it on because the room was hot they did turn it on ( not really cold but a little bit cooler). At 7 am it was turned off again.

Hotel is listed as having free broadband access. In reality non-existent. Used a nearby "Italian" cafe which produced amazing food and free broadband.Hotel is rather tired and tried to hike price which had been reserved through Expedia.

This hotel was ok. Heavy on tours but at $300RMB whos complaining. Only problem is that they do not turn on AC until 8pm and it was really, really hot. If you are booking here in the spring/summer I would avoid this hotel unless you are planning a late check-in or really enjoy Saunas. Our first rooms AC was actually broken and when i first complained about it (shortly after arrival) the girl at the front desk said she was going to send someone up to fix it. No reply after 3 complaints on the phone so my Wife went down to get someone and that was when we were informed about the 8pm policy. That kind of ticked me off as she could have just said that on the phone but maybe she just didn't understand me. Guilin as a city has very poor and little English. Not like Beijing. So we decided to head out until 8pm as our room temp was unbearable Upon return the AC still didn't work so she sent up a repair guy. After being out all day we weren't in the mood to wait for the repair guy to fix the AC so I went downstairs to ask for another room (which is what they should have done in the first place). She was hesitant at first but I insisted and finally she let us move. Glad we did. We got moved to the 3rd floor which I thnk has just been refurbished. If you are checking in to this hotel ask for the 3rd floor for sure, it was night and day from the carpets to the bed. I would stay at this hotel again for the price and location but to be honest Guilin is not really a good city. Next time I will skip it and head straight for Yangshou or Longsheng.

We booked two rooms on the 6th floor with views of the river and the mountains beyond. The view was truly wonderful - except for the ugly billboards that are on either side of the bridge - but the hotel can't do too much about that.... (do they even have "planning and zoning" in China?) The location was wonderful with lots of food (including a surprising number of non-chain western restaurants) and shopping choices right around the hotel in addition to being across the bridge from a gorgeous park. Plus breakfast was fantastic! We were there during the slow season, so the first morning there was no buffet. Instead we ordered from the menu (breakfast was included with our reservation). We had our choice of American, Continental or Chinese breakfast. We all got the American. Our eggs were cooked to order with choice of meat, toast, coffee and juice in addition to a wonderful pastry basket and a fruit plate that was brought out for "desert." The next morning there was a buffet with a very nice variety - but we were still given the option to order from the menu. The restaurant manager was very efficient and hospitable (and spoke some English) and jumped in and worked right along side her employees. Downsides? I was unclear as to whether the water in the mini fridge was complimentary or not - so we didn't drink it. (Usually there is a clearly marked bottle of drinking water for each guest each day in Chinese hotel rooms.) Also there was no bathtub - although the shower was quite nice and didn't leak to the surrounding bathroom floor at all (unusual in China to not have a wet bathroom floor). And I could have done without the graphic "amenities" for sale in the bathroom - especially considering we were traveling with our small child and my husband's parents. But overall, I would definitely stay at the Universal again.
